SAFE HANDLING REQUIREMENTS
Our mission is to create and provide the freshest and highest quality feline appropriate raw cat food by utilizing the same ultra-high quality raw materials you would want to feed your family.
At Fegnion, we apply stringent safety measures while creating the ultimate raw cat food nutrition for your hyper carnivore.
Treat our raw cat food products the same way you would treat your raw meat and poultry.
KEEP FROZEN
KEEP FROZEN UNTIL READY TO USE
Keep food frozen until you are ready to thaw and feed it to your cat.
Set your freezer temperature at 0 F (-18C) or colder. We highly recommend getting a thermometer if your freezer does not have one already built in.
We recommend storing Fegnion raw cat food at the back of the freezer, or the rear center, where it’s the coldest.
Do not store any Fegnion raw cat food on the freezer door, which is the warmest part of the freezer. Frequent opening and closing of the freezer door make it difficult for your freezer to hold the cold temperature. Only open the freezer door if necessary. Make sure you properly close your freezer door at all times.
When properly stored in the freezer, frozen Fegnion raw cat food is safe and nutritionally complete to consume if fed within 6 months from its production date.
THAWING
ALWAYS THAW IN THE REFRIGERATOR OR COLD WATER
Fegnion raw cat food should only be thawed in a refrigerator or cold water away from other food. Never thaw on a countertop or in a sink.
Refrigerator:
This is the ideal method of thawing to ensure the highest level of safety. This method takes more time and some planning on your end. It can take 24-36 hours to fully thaw Fegnion raw cat food before serving depending on your refrigerator’s temperature.
Take 1-2 days’ worth of feedings from the freezer and place them in the refrigerator. Once you get into a routine, you should be taking out every day or every other day 1-2 days’ worth of food.
The best is to plan ahead and thaw Fegnion slowly overnight in the refrigerator where the temperature stays constant (on the bottom and back of the refrigerator) and it is in a safe zone (at 40º F or below).
Cold water bath:
This is the next best method when you forgot to plan ahead. And this can happen to all of us.
Partially submerge Fegnion sealed container in a cold water bath making sure no water could be introduced to the food (keep the water level under the container’s lid seal) which can get contaminated with bacteria and/or make it watery. Also, you may want to place the sealed container in a zip-lock plastic bag before you put it in a cold water bath to prevent water from entering. Keep changing the water every 20-30 min for a continuous thaw. Food should defrost within 1-2 hours. Do not keep defrosting past 2 hours.
Never use a stove, microwave, toaster oven, or oven to thaw Fegnion raw cat food. Using heat to thaw Fegnion raw cat food will destroy essential nutrients and enzymes. Heating Fegnion defeats the purpose of feeding raw.
Never thaw Fegnion raw cat food in a hot or warm water bath where you expose it to the Danger Zone (temperatures between 40º and 140 °F) where pathogenic bacteria thrive and will multiply rapidly, making the food unsafe for your cat to consume.
KEEP THAWED FOOD IN THE REFRIGERATOR
ALWAYS KEEP THAWED RAW CAT FOOD IN THE REFRIGERATOR UNTIL READY TO SERVE
Set your refrigerator’s temperature at 40ºF (4ºC) or lower. We highly recommend getting a thermometer if your refrigerator does not have one already built in.
Always store Fegnion raw cat food at the back of the refrigerator, bottom shelf, where it’s the coldest. This is also the best place for storing raw cat food in case there is a leak to minimize cross-contamination with other food.
Never store any Fegnion raw cat food on the refrigerator’s door, which is the warmest part of the refrigerator, where the temperature fluctuates the most.
KEEP IT SEPARATE
KEEP RAW CAT FOOD AND ITS JUICES AWAY FROM OTHER FOODS BOTH IN THE FREEZER/REFRIGERATOR AND DURING PREPARATION
Keep raw cat food and its juices away from other foods both in the freezer/refrigerator and during preparation to prevent cross-contamination.
Always store Fegnion raw cat food at the back of the refrigerator, bottom shelf, where it’s the coldest. This is also the best place for storing raw cat food in case there is a leak to minimize cross-contamination with other food.
KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN
KEEP RAW CAT FOOD AND TREATS AWAY FROM CHILDREN
Children should not be designated feeders. Store raw cat food and treats away from the reach of young children. Children younger than five years old are at higher risk for food-borne illness because their immune systems are still developing and can’t fight off infections.
WASH YOUR HANDS WITH CLEAN, WARM SOAPY WATER FOR 20 SECONDS BEFORE AND AFTER HANDLING RAW CAT FOOD OR TREATS
The best way to clean your hands is by washing them with clean, warm soapy water for 20 seconds before and after handling our raw cat food and treats.
If you don’t have access to soap and water, it’s recommended to use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol content.
FRESH FOR UP TO 2 OR 3 DAYS
WITH PROPER REFRIGERATION FEGNION RAW CAT FOOD IS FRESH FOR UP TO 2-3 DAYS ONCE THAWED
Always keep thawed cat food in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Always store Fegnion raw cat food at the back of the refrigerator, bottom shelf, where it’s the coldest.
IF YOUR CAT DOESN’T CONSUME ALL THE FOOD SERVED TO HER WITHIN 30 MINUTES, REMOVE ANY LEFTOVERS AND DISCARD
After serving the required amount of thawed Fegnion raw cat food at meal time, place the remaining food straight back into the refrigerator. This is to preserve the integrity and safety of the thawed Fegnion product by keeping the food in a safe temperature zone.
Never discard thawed juice from the container once the food thaws as it contains essential nutrients that are vital to your cats’ health. Just mix it all together and serve.
Keep served for up to 30 minutes. If the food hasn’t been consumed within 10-15 minutes of serving, it is safe to return to the fridge and serve it again at the next feeding. Please note, food is safe to feed again for another 15-20 minutes. IF NOT CONSUMED, PLEASE DISCARD.
Any leftovers not consumed within 30 minutes should be discarded.
CLEAN AND DISINFECT
CLEAN AND DISINFECT ALL PREPARATION AREAS
Clean and disinfect all preparation areas including countertops, refrigerator(s), and any items such as feeding bowls, utensils, and cutting boards that come in contact with Fegnion raw cat food and treats, first with hot soapy water then follow with a disinfectant.
This same approach should apply to your cat’s feeding areas after your cat has finished eating.
WASH YOUR CATS DISH AFTER EACH MEAL
WASH YOUR CAT’S DISH AFTER EACH MEAL
Wash your cat’s dish and its serving utensils using hot soapy water after each meal.
We recommend the use of ceramic, glass, or stainless steel flat dishes for your fur babies. They are easy to clean and easy to sanitize and also cat friendly by preventing their sensitive whiskers from hitting against the plate.
Avoid the use of plastic dishes as they are porous and can retain odors and are not easily sanitized.
Also, don’t forget to provide a clean water bowl with fresh water daily.
